It is not a big secreet that many web designer or information architect create a rough scetch of the future web site using a pencil and a piece of paper before they use any of computer based software such as Photoshop, Firework, etc. If you think that this method does not have any benefts, it is wrong. Think about the advtanges you can get if you are able to communicate your idea to your client in the very early stage, or make sure that the features which your client want to have are integrated in your future design bevore you start coding. Another advantage is that you can correct the mistakes early without having to rewrite code or moving design elements from one place to another using design software. You can create a rough scetch for sitemap, wireframe, or storyboard.
When I was reading The Design of Sites I found a software called Denim which can subtitute pencil and paper. It is a software that let you create scetch using a graphics tablet. You also can create storyboard, sitemap, and also some other features such as linking one page with another and displays the relations of the pages. I haven’t really try it yet, because I don’t have a graphic tablet, but you can see how good it is from a video provided on Denim web site.
